Statewide Charter School Board audit finds no misappropriation at Epic

OKLAHOMA CITY (Jan. 12, 2026) – The Oklahoma Statewide Charter School Board has voted to accept the findings of a forensic audit of Epic Charter Schools' finances. The audit revealed no misappropriation of funds or willful wrongdoing but did identify several areas of improvement the school should address.

The months-long audit involved examining more than a year of Epic’s financial records, conducting numerous interviews with current and former staff members, and analyzing the school’s accounting and governance procedures. Ultimately, 15 recommendations were made, most of which have already been implemented or are currently being implemented.

Conducted by the accounting and advisory firm Carr, Riggs & Ingram, the audit focused specifically on the processes related to Epic’s enrollment, budgeting, payroll, financial reporting, internal controls and financial decision-making practices.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to address the issues outlined in this audit,” said Epic spokesperson Erin Hatfield. “While there is still more to do, we have come a long way in addressing issues that led to last year’s difficult situation. This report provides a clear roadmap as we continue to secure the long-term success and stability of our school for the 31,000 students and families we serve.”

The Statewide Charter School Board is Epic’s statewide authorizer, overseeing all charter schools and virtual charter schools in Oklahoma.
