Epic ASL Students Place at Annual USAO Scholastic Meet
OKLAHOMA CITY (April 8, 2026) - Three students from Epic Charter Schools have placed in the American Sign Language (ASL) I and II competitions at the annual Scholastic Meet held at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma. Alexis Meridith took first place in ASL I, while Larissa Burton and Addison Adams took second and third place, respectively, in ASL II.
The contests evaluate receptive language skills, vocabulary, grammar and culture, and are restricted to students currently enrolled in ASL classes. The competition is limited to three students per school with no more than 30 contestants in each division.
“To say Epic is proud of these three remarkable young people doesn’t even come close to describing the excitement surrounding these students’ wins,” said Epic Superintendent Dr. Shaun Ross. “ASL is the third most-used language in the United States, so not only are they winners, but they will have a skill that will serve them well in the future.”
According to the Oklahoma Department of Rehabilitation Services, 5.3% of Oklahomans have some form of hearing disability. Nationally, there are more than 300,000 deaf or hard-of-hearing children between ages 1 and 17, according to the National Association of the Deaf.
